LIC Statement on Recent US positions towards Lebanon

The Lebanese Information Center in the U.S. (LIC) recognizes and appreciates the positions and actions taken by the U.S. Administration in recent weeks regarding the situation in Lebanon.

In statements, interviews, visits to Lebanon, phone calls to Lebanese officials, as well as in meetings with Lebanese-American groups, various U.S. officials, including the President, Secretary of State, Under Secretary of Defense, Special Envoy for the Middle East, Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, U.S. Ambassador to the U.N., U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon, State Department spokesman, and others in the Administration have all re-asserted the United States’ unequivocal support of Lebanon’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. In addition, U.S. officials have expressed the United States’ firm commitment to justice, security and stability, strengthening the state institutions, rejecting foreign arming of militias and promoting a permanent regional peace, but not at the expense of Lebanon.

The Lebanese people and the Lebanese-American community are greatly encouraged by these clear and steadfast positions on the critical issues affecting Lebanon’s stability and its future. Moreover, the LIC applauds these efforts, and urges the Administration to:

Persist in its unwavering support to Lebanese sovereignty and democracy, and to implementing UNSC resolutions 1559, 1680 and 1701;

Continue its solid commitment to upholding justice (according to UNSCR 1757) making clear to the Government of Lebanon , to the opponents of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL), and to the International Community, its unequivocal support of the STL;

Increase its communication and coordination with friends and allies within and outside Lebanon, to remain steadfast in enforcing security and the rule of law;

Warn the enemies of Lebanon against meddling in the internal affairs of the country and undermining state institutions by supporting and arming illegal militias;

Maintain military and economic aid while conveying to the Lebanese Military and Security commanders their crucial role in defending Lebanon’s people and institutions.
